What do you see as possible potential pitfalls of using pediatric or an adult dosing guide for calculating neonatal doses? Base your response on your knowledge of both the pharmacokinetic (PK) and pharmacodynamic (PD) principles as it relates to our neonatal patients. It is our hope that this exercise will highlight how changes in body composition and physiologic development, when combined with a drug’s kinetic properties, may alter the selection of certain drugs for therapy due to safety concerns. The scope of pharmacokinetics is complex. Due to the nature of this course, you will be comparing the neonate’s physiology to a healthy adult, but please realize that changes in body composition and chemistry varies from person to person. Even within the same age demographic, there may alterations and a decision needs to be assessed to whether a medication is suitable for therapy. Please use the table below to format your responses. You may upload the table as your group post. Good luck and we hope you enjoy this exercise!
First group post due no later than FRIDAY, 1/31 by 5 PM and FINAL posts due Sunday, 2/2 at 8 AM EST.
